Close Call with Man Charged with Assault by Auto and DWI

We would like to take a moment to be thankful in early 2015.

A few days ago on January 2, just after 9 p.m., three troopers narrowly avoided disaster on State Highway 77 in Upper Deerfield Township.

Andres Esteban-Juan was driving his Toyota Four Runner southbound when he entered the northbound lane of travel. Three troopers were traveling in the northbound lanes responding to a call for service.

Esteban-Juan struck the second and third troop cars, missing the first due to the trooper’s evasive maneuver. He then fled the scene on foot.

One trooper was extricated and flown for precautionary purposes and the other was transported by ambulance with minor injuries.

Andres Esteban-Juan was apprehended after a brief search and charged with assault by auto, DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest by flight, and driving while suspended. He was lodged at the Cumberland County jail in lieu of 50,000 bail.

We are thankful that our three troopers involved escaped this incident with their lives, and we would like to remind everyone to be alert on the roadways. This could happen to anyone.
