HS WRESTLING: Area Wrestlers Advance in Region 6 Tournament

Jackson Memorial and Jackson Liberty High Schools each had two wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Region 6 Wrestling Championships with wins in the preliminary round on Wednesday at Pine Belt Arena.

Matt McGowan and Adante Davis earned the right to join their Jackson Memorial teammates Mike Spino and Tanner Kelly in Friday’s quarterfinals with wins in their weight classes. McGowan, the sixth seed at 126 pounds, pinned Ethan Byrne of Red Bank Catholic on Wednesday and will face third-seeded Nicholas Gallicchio of Toms River South in the quarterfinals. Davis, the seventh-seed at 195 pounds, won a 5-3 decision over Nick Suriano of Southern Regional and will face second-seeded Matt McKenzie of Wall.

Nicholas Pellegrino and Jared DiZenzo both won Wednesday and will join Tyler Kalmowitz in representing Jackson Liberty in the quarterfinals. Sixth-seeded Pellegrino pinned Dylan Cardell of Southern Regional at 113 pounds and will face third-seeded Nick Reilly of Toms River North in the quarterfinals. DiZenzo, the ninth-seeded heavyweight, won a 3-2 decision over Taylor Larkin of Freehold Township and will face top-seeded Nick Rivera of Brick Memorial on Friday. Jeremy Bollard lost an 8-4 decision to Pat Mooney of Southern Regional at 152 pounds.

Cristiaan Dailey of Donovan Catholic, Patrick O’Donnell of Toms River North, Anthony Costanza of Brick Township and Chris Hayes of Brick Memorial also won Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals.
