19 Dead In Ocean County Overnight, County Sheriff Warns “It’s not over!”

Shore News Network

TOMS RIVER-A spike in the daily volume of COVID-19 positives today reversed a downward trend that started this past holiday weekend has shown that Ocean County is not yet at the peak of the pandemic.    Abnormalities in daily figures are relative to test volume across multiple COVID-19 test centers, bot public and private.

Nearly 300 new cases were reported on Thursday, making the third-highest day since testing and reporting began in Ocean County.

Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy delivered a grim reminder on Facebook today.

“Today once again shows an increase in positive COVID19 cases,” he said. “Social distancing will only help this. We continue to advise the public that this pandemic is not over! Remember these are only the people being tested!”
It is not known exactly how many people in the county are carriers of the virus who have not been officially tested.   Those carriers can include asymptomatic hosts and those with only minor symptoms that didn’t require medical attention.

In the past 24 hours, 19 people died of COVID-19 in Ocean County bringing the total deaths countywide to 185.    4,252 individuals have been tested positive for the virus.  Mastronardy did not speculate on how many could be infected who have not tested.

Statewide, 75,317 cases have been confirmed. If New Jersey was a country, it would be ranked 9th globally in confirmed cases.  3,518 have died statewide since the pandemic began.
