HS WRESTLING: Brick Memorial Wins Four Titles, Brick Township Two at District 23 Tournament

Matt Wardlaw, Gianni Ghione, Luke Vescovi and Nick Rivera of Brick Memorial High School won titles Saturday at the NJSIAA District 23 Wrestling Tournament in Brick. Joe Ferigne and Dean Helstowski of Brick Township also captured their weight classes.

For Rivera, it was his third district heavyweight title in as many years. He won a 3-2 decision over Forrest Gardener of Point Pleasant Borough in the finals after pinning Zach Youngberg in the semifinals and Jaylen Paige in the quarterfinals.

Wardlaw, Ghione and Vescovi all won their second consecutive division titles. Wardlaw won a 3-2 decision over Blake Dale of Point Pleasant Borough at 113 pounds after winning at 106 pounds in 2015. Ghione, who won at 113 pounds last year, pinned Jack Kelly of Wall in this year’s finals at 120 pounds. Vescovi won a 7-0 decision over Dylan Davies of Point Pleasant Borough in the final round at 138 pounds a year after winning at 132 pounds.


Ferigne won his first district title with a 4-2 decision over Ben Sabo of Point Pleasant Borough at 106 pounds. Helstowski won a 10-4 decision over Nick Faber of Neptune at 182 pounds for his first district championship.

Chris Hayes came in second place at 220 pounds for the Mustangs while the Green Dragons got second-place finishes from David Santiago at 132 pounds, Danny Moreno at 160 pounds and Anthony Rusignuolo at 195 pounds.
