HS WRESTLING: Four from Brick Memorial Win in Region 6 Quarterfinals

The town of Brick will be well-represented in the semifinals of the NJSIAA Region 6 Wrestling Championships after four wrestlers from Brick Memorial High School and two from Brick Township earned their way there with wins in the quarterfinal round at Pine Belt Arena on Friday.

Gianni Ghione, Luke Vescovi, Chris Hayes and Nick Rivera will represent Brick Memorial in their respective weight classes Saturday. Ghione, the top seed at 120 pounds, won an 18-2 technical fall over Tim Klemser of Shore Regional in the quarterfinals. Vescovi, seeded third at 138 pounds, won a 3-2 decision over Mike Racanelli of Southern Regional and will face Cole Corrigan of Toms River South in the semifinals. Fourth-seeded Hayes won a 16-12 decision over Joe Marano of Manalapan at 220 pounds and Rivera, the top-seeded heavyweight, won a 5-1 decision over Jared DiZenzo of Jackson Liberty on Friday.

Brick Township will be represented in the semifinals by Joe Ferigne and Dean Helstowski. Ferigne, the eighth-seed at 106 pounds, won by forfeit Friday and will face fifth-seeded Hunter Gutierrez of Lacey in the semifinals. Helstowski, the top seed at 182 pounds, won a 13-4 major decision over Jack Baker of Point Pleasant Beach and will face Christopher Nielsen of Pinelands on Saturday.


Jackson Liberty had three winners Friday as Nicholas Pellegrino, Tyler Kalmowitz and Tanner Kelly all earned spots in the semifinals. Matt McGowan of Jackson Memorial, AJ Meyers of Toms River East and Owen McClave of Toms River South are also still alive in the tournament.
