HS WRESTLING: Two Titles for Brick Memorial in Region 6 Championships

Juniors Nick Rivera and Gianni Ghione of Brick Memorial High School won their second career regional titles Saturday in the NJSIAA Region 6 Wrestling Championships at Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.

Ghione, the top seed at 120 pounds, won a 9-3 decision over Richie Koehler of Christian Brothers Academy in the final round to earn his second title. He also won as a freshman in 2014 at 106 pounds. Rivera, the top-seeded heavyweight, won a 3-1 decision over William Oxley of Christian Brothers Academy to capture his second consecutive title at 285 pounds.

Senior Owen McClave of Toms River South won a 5-2 decision over Jake Benner of Ocean Township at 132 pounds for his third career regional championship. He also won at 113 pounds in 2014 and 120 pounds in 2015.

Sixth-seeded junior Matt McGowan of Jackson Memorial upset top-seeded Russell Benson of Raritan with a 3-2 ultimate-tie-breaker win at 126 pounds to capture his first regional title.


At 152 pounds, top-seeded junior AJ Meyers of Toms River East won a 5-1 decision over sixth-seeded Giancarlo Crivelli of Point Pleasant Beach to win his first regional championship.
