Sandy Hook: What’s Open and What’s Not During COVID-19

SANDY HOOK, NJ – Want to know what’s open in Sandy Hook and what’s not?  Here’s a list provided by the National Parks Service as the Gateway National Park rolls out a phased-in approach to reopening the entire park. Gateway will resume collecting beach access fees at Sandy Hook on Wednesday, June 17. Season passes will be sold at this time as well. Annual season passes will be sold once fee collections resume. A date for this has not been determined at this time.

All designated picnic-barbecuing areas are temporarily closed to the public until further notice.

Can I have a picnic at Sandy Hook?

Picnicking outside of designated picnic-barbecuing areas is allowed, but not for large groups.  Barbecuing is not allowed. Group picnics are not allowed.


Can I go camping at Sandy Hook?

All Campground locations are temporarily closed until further notice including Fort Wadsworth Campground in Staten Island, Floyd Bennett Field Campground in Brooklyn and the Sandy Hook Campground. Permits for events and activities are not currently being issued.

Can I go fishing at Sandy Hook?

2019 Fishing/Parking Permits will be honored in 2020 season until further notice. (Only 2020 4×4 permits are allowed at Breezy Point).

Sandy Hook is open from 5 am to 9 pm. Collection of fees will resume beginning Wednesday, June 17. The daily fee is $15 per day or $75 per season for most vehicles. For oversized vehicles (more than 20 feet), charge is $30 per day or $150 per season. Hours of collection are 7 am to 5 pm.

Here are some things that are not allowed at Sandy Hook.

  • Coolers that are more than 24 quarts in size per group.
  • Dogs and kites from March 15-September 15. (Leashed dogs are allowed on bay-side beaches)
  • Entering areas with symbolic fencing
  • Climbing on rocks/groins
  • Accessing the dunes (except at designated dune crossings)
