We are all familiar with James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader, but few people realize Jones wasn’t actually the actor in the Darth Vader costume in the movies.  That role was played by actor David Prowse.  Today, Prowse, who played Lord Vader in the original trilogy passed away at age 85.

“It’s with great regret and heart-wrenching sadness for us and millions of fans around the world, to announce that our client Dave Prowse MBE has passed away at the age of 85,” his agent Thomas Bowington said today.

Prowse, a former bodybuilder also appeared in the 1967 movie Casino Royale, A Clockwork Orange and trained Christopher Reeve in his role as Superman in 1978. Although Prowse played Vader, his face was never shown.  In Return of the Jedi when Vader was finally unmasked, the face was that of Sebastian Shaw.
