MONROE COUNTY, FL – Firefighters rescued a 13-year-old girl from a doublewide trailer fire near Cross Street and 5th Avenue at approximately 5 p.m. Tuesday. The girl was found in a back bedroom and taken to Lower Keys Medical Center for smoke inhalation treatment. Her condition was listed as stable Tuesday night.

There were no serious injuries reported.

Detective Sgt. Linda Mixon and Deputy Ty Torres happened to be very near the scene and arrived first. Deputy Torres found a rear window ajar with thick black smoke emitting. He identified himself as Sheriff’s Office and yelled if anyone was inside several times, but there was no answer. Deputy Torres attempted to make entry but was overcome by the fire. Neighbors stated the structure was unoccupied. Deputy Torres and Sgt. Mixon then went to the adjacent/attached mobile unit and was able to enter, finding no one inside.

Monroe County Fire Rescue Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter and were able to enter the structure, finding and safely removing the girl inside.
Florida Department of Children and Families was notified of the case.

DCF and fire officials are investigating the blaze. The one trailer affected appeared to be a total loss.
