Maskdebators: Anti-maskers who mock people wearing masks while alone are no better than the maskers

Ryan Dickinson

The great debate in America right now is to wear a mask or not to wear a mask.  There’s no middle ground.  Maskers such as New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and California Governor Gavin Newsom want the whole world masked up 24/7.   Anti-maskers don’t want to be told what to do, but they also want to mock those who do choose to mask  up 24/7.

First, it’s pretty ridiculous to see somebody driving their car or walking alone in a park fully masked up, but at the end of the day, that’s their choice and who are we to judge them for their own personal choice?

On the other hand, you have a radical anti-mask contingent who will go as far as pulling off people’s masks and fighting people at the local Dollar General or KFC for being told to wear a mask.  In some cases in America, telling another person to wear a mask has actually resulted in their death.

On the other hand, you have the social justice warriors that will call you a murderer if your mask isn’t covering your nose.   COVID-19 has brought a certain level of insanity in America to the surface.  That insanity has always been there, but it’s now more evident than ever.

Wearing a mask in public spaces is the right thing to do, maybe not for you, but for those around you.  You might feel invincible, heck you might even be immune to the ‘fake China virus’, but others around you might be very susceptible.   So in close groups with strangers, yes, you should always, as Phil  Murphy says, “mask up”.   If you’re sitting on the beach and there’s nobody within 50 feet of you and you’re wearing a mask, go ahead and enjoy that tan line, we won’t judge.  Maybe just chuckle a little.

The one thing missing in the great mask debate in America right now is the ability for people to find common ground.  People tend to dig in on bizarre polar opposites these days on nearly every issue, but here’s one thing that is a fact.

If you think you are a conservative, Republica, freedom-loving, gun-toting American shouting ‘Merica several times per day and you then criticize these people who wear masks to bed, or lift their mask to take bites of food, you pretty much sound like the people you’re mocking, because freedom goes both ways.   You’re free to infect yourself, your family and your elders and they are free to go overboard to make sure no droplets of COVID-19 enter their body in the after trail of a bite of steak flavored tofu or in between sips of an overpriced Starbucks coffee.
