WARWICK, RI –   On Saturday night, a Rhode Island State Trooper was stopped on the shoulder on Interstate 95 conducting a traffic stop when his vehicle was rear-ended by a vehicle being operated by a drunk driver.

Tonight a Trooper was struck while in his cruiser in the breakdown lane of I-95 South in Warwick during a car stop. After being rear-ended, the cruiser was pushed into the stopped vehicle. Thankfully the Trooper and the other operators were not seriously injured,” the Rhode Island State Police said.

This incident remains under investigation and additional details will be released tomorrow. The driver who caused the crash has been charged with DUI and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

“We are thankful to have avoided a tragedy tonight and want to remind all drivers not to drink and drive, slow down, and move over when approaching emergency vehicles. It’s the law,” the department said.
