Newly elected Congressman dies from COVID-19, documented final days of treatment

Luke Letlow, 41, a Republican who was just elected by the people of Louisiana to represent their state in Congress has died of COVID-19.  Ten days ago, Lutlow let his constituents know he had tested positive for COVID-19.

“I have tested positive for COVID-19. I’m at home resting, following all CDC guidelines, quarantine protocols, and the recommendations of my doctors,” Lutlow posted on December 18th.

Three days later, Lutlow found himself in St. Francis Hospital, praising the public for their blood and plasma donations. He seemed in decent spirits while he underwent his treatment for COVID-19.

“I am currently undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at St. Francis Hospital by a wonderful team of doctors and nurses. I am confident that with their help I will be on the mend soon. I also believe strongly in the power of prayer, and our family has been blessed by a praying army of people,” he wrote on December 21st. “While here, I’ve learned firsthand how important plasma and blood donations are during this pandemic. For those who’ve had Covid already, your plasma is ESPECIALLY needed by those who are suffering. I cannot stress this enough. Please consider saving lives by going out and donating at your local blood bank. It may very well be the gift of life that you are giving a family this Christmas.”

Two days later, Letlow was transferred to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Academic Medical Center and it was reported that he was in stable condition by Dr. G.E. Ghali, Chancellor of LSU Health Shreveport.  Ghali said Letlow had begun a treatment consisting of Remdesivir and steroids.

Lutlow’s wife Julie announced Sunday morning that things might not be going well for the newly elected Congressman.

“While Luke continues his treatment and remains in stable condition, the doctors have told us the road to recovery and the length of time is hard to predict and different for everyone,” she said.

On Tuesday, Lutlow passed away.  In just 10 days, the virus had taken the ultimate toll on the Congressman-elect.  Letlow is survived by his wife, Julia Barnhill Letlow, PhD., and two young children.
