North Myrtle Beach Police Officer Killed in New Years Morning Crash

MYRTLE BEACH, SC –  The Myrtle Beach community is morning the loss of a respected police officer who was involved in a single vehicle crash early this morning. Earlier today, North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Sergeant Gordon William Best lost his life while in service to the community.

About 4:00 am , Sergeant Best responded to a call for service in Barefoot Resort. Roads were very wet and, while headed southbound on Highway 17, he lost control of his Police vehicle. The vehicle veered into a northbound lane and collided with a utility pole. Sergeant Best was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

The SC Highway Patrol Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating this accident. We thank Horry County Police, Myrtle Beach Police, and the SC Highway Patrol for their assistance at the scene of the accident and for their valued support of Sergeant Best’s co-workers and friends behind the scenes.

Patrol Sergeant Gordon William Best was born on November 12, 1990. He joined the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department on October 21, 2013, and was promoted to Sergeant on February 17, 2019.
