PARK FOREST, IL – Lazaro Diaz has been named the “Civilian Employee of the Year” by the Park Forest Police Department.  Diaz, a Mexican immigrant works 6 to 7 days per week for the department as a facility maintenance worker, the department said. In 2020, that role became more important than ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“2020 highlighted the importance of Lazaro’s role in keeping the police facility clean and maintained, as throughout the pandemic he worked extra hours, and was often at work 6 and 7 days per week to conduct extra sanitizing of the police facility in an effort to keep staff and visitors safe,” the department said. “In addition to that monumental challenge, Lazaro also oversaw the remodel of our report taking rooms to be more comfortable for those filing police reports and the remodel of our break room, which had not been updated since at least the 1990’s.”

Lazaro was born in Durango, Mexico, and emigrated to the US in his 20’s. After moving to America, he met his wife, Janet, and he is both a father and doting grandfather.
