Mount Pleasant, S.C. – After a social media post claimed police officers were placed at Pickney Elementary School to bully parents into complying with the school’s facemask policy, police here said it didn’t quite happen that way.

On May 5, 2021, the Mount Pleasant Police Department observed a post on Facebook describing 3 officers being placed at Pinckney Elementary School regarding a face mask issue. Commenters felt as if the school was using police officers to intimidate parents. The claim was made that three officers were enforcing mask rules.

The department said no.

“There were only 2 officers at the front of the school during the opening bell. One was the School Resource Officer assigned to that school and the other was an officer who was dropping off their child before going to work,” the department said. “The parent and child were stopped by school staff and informed of the mask rules. Our officers were not involved in enforcing the school district’s mask policy.”
