Boyfriend murdered his girlfriend then tried to make it appear to be suicide

Camden, N.J. – A woman was found dead in a home in Camden on Monday and her boyfriend who murdered her tried to make it look like a suicide.

It wasn’t and investigators were able to determine Edwin Zavaleta killed her.

The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said the boyfriend of a woman found dead inside her Camden home on Monday has been charged in her death, according to Acting Camden County Prosecutor Jill S. Mayer and Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez.


Edwin Zavaleta, 28, of Camden, has been charged with one count of first-degree Murder and one count of fourth-degree Tampering with Evidence. On May 10, police responded to their home 1000 block of S. 6th St. around 8:45 a.m. for a report of a woman found unresponsive. Officers discovered Tonia Yamileth Zavaleta, 25, dead in an upstairs bedroom.Zavaleta’s Manner of Death was determined a homicide by the Camden County Medical Examiner on May 11. Her Cause of Death was listed as a stab wound and blunt force trauma to the neck.

Detectives determined Edwin Zavaleta allegedly killed his girlfriend before staging it to appear as a suicide. He was arrested and transported to the Camden County Correctional Facility awaiting a detention hearing.

All persons charged with crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
