89-year-old man suffering from dementia shot and killed during violent outburst accidentally

COLUMBUS, OH – On Friday, May 14, 2021, at 7:46PM, Columbus Police Officers were called to 2329 Sunbury Rd. on a report of shooting. On arrival, officers found 89-year-old James Broskie suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. CFD Medic 93 transported Broskie to Grant Hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced deceased at 8:40PM.According to family members, Broskie was suffering from dementia and was prone to violent outbursts.

A family member was attempting to calm Broskie during such an outburst when Broskie produced a handgun. The family member and Broskie were struggling for control of the handgun when the handgun discharged, fatally wounding Broskie.

No charges have been filed at this time, this case will be forwarded to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s office for review.
