Man charged for shooting murder of Anthony Butts after argument escalated to gunfight

COLUMBUS, OH – Columbus police responded to a murder scene on Saturday to find the body of Anthony Butts. An investigation determined Butts had been shot and was unresponsive to arriving officers. He was pronounced dead.

Today, the department announced it has a suspect, who also was shot during the incident.

According to police, the suspect in this homicide has been identified as 22-year-old Anthony Wilkes. Wilkes has been charged with murder for the death of Mr. Anthony Butts.


On May 15, 2021, at 11:08 pm, officers were dispatched to 1081 E. 18th Ave on a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located Butts unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. Butts was pronounced at the scene at 11:18 pm.

Patrol officers also located a person of interest, who was suffering from gunshot wounds, inside a vehicle parked at 17th and Cleveland Ave. That person, Wilkes, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Wilkes was sent to the hospital critical condition. At this time, this incident stems from an argument that led to the shooting.
