Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center held its Annual Resident & Fellow Graduation Ceremony June 11 in HOPE Tower. As Monmouth and Ocean counties’ leading academic medical center, dating back to the 1950’s, Jersey Shore’s faculty and administrators celebrated the graduation of 62 residents in seven specialties and nine fellows in five specialties. This is the largest graduating class in the medical center’s history.
“This truly is an outstanding class of graduates, who continued to provide our patients with great care, as we overcame the significant challenges presented by the pandemic,” said David S. Kountz, M.D., MBA, FACP, vice president, Academic Affairs, Jersey Shore University Medical Center and co-chief academic officer, Hackensack Meridian Health. “No doubt they will continue their excellence as they progress in their careers, whether in practice or continuing their training in fellowship programs elsewhere. Fortunately, many are staying on staff at Jersey Shore and at other network medical centers.”
Jersey Shore University Medical Center sponsors ACGME-accredited residency training in General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics and Psychiatry, as well as residencies in Pharmacy, Podiatry and Dentistry. “I’m extremely happy to see the growth and expansion of Jersey Shore’s medical education program over the years, and now the largest graduating class,” said Kenneth N. Sable, M.D., MBA, FACEP, regional president, Southern Market, Hackensack Meridian Health. “It is a luxury to have so many dedicated educators on staff providing their expertise and experience, collaboratively, to new generations of exceptional physicians. Congratulations to all the graduates.”
Additionally, the medical center provides a Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship through the Department of Pediatrics; six fellowships in the Department of Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease, Endocrinology, Critical Care, Pulmonary Disease, Nephrology, and Hematology and Medical Oncology; and a fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry).
“The educational environment and collaboration between our faculty, residents, fellows, medical staff, and nurses ultimately benefits all our patients as we strive for exemplary patient care,” said Vito Buccellato, MPA, LNHA, president and chief hospital executive, Jersey Shore University Medical Center. “I’m grateful for this graduating classes’ dedication to our patients and congratulate them on their wonderful achievement.”
Medical residency training is required to practice as a physician in the U.S., and begins after graduation from medical school. Fellowship training enables physicians to specialize in specific fields of medicine. Jersey University Medical Center will welcome 75 new residents in June and 15 new fellows in July, to begin their respective training programs.
