PORT ST. LUCIE, FL -Two known criminals who have been traveling around the region stealing credit cards and burglarizing victims have been caught. Their dyed blue poodle was also apprehended and turned over to animal control officers in order to care for and find new owners for it.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Department, 26-year old Terrell Esther and 39-year old Basil Alfred Alonso Walkes seemed a little surprised at the response by Martin County Law enforcement when they were stopped after using stolen credit cards at a local retail store.

“They appeared less interested to know that they are wanted in multiple jurisdictions for crimes including fraudulent use of credit cards and burglary,” the department said. “Esther, who is from Chicago, and Walkes who is from Miami, are classic traveling criminals who burglarize victims, then use their credit cards to buy gift cards at retail stores. But Christmas in July for the pair ended on the wrong exit when the sounds of the season were our sirens.”

Both suspects were taken into custody and face multiple charges including theft, fraudulent use of credit cards, burglary, and criminal mischief. They have no bond.

Basil Alfred Alonso Wilkes is also wanted in Georgia on charges for similar crimes.

The poodle that the couple was traveling with was taken into protective custody by MCSO Animal Services Officers. She will remain at the Humane Society until the suspects designate a caretaker for the animal.
