WASHINGTON, D.C. – Since the January 6th breach of the U.S. Capitol by right-wing protesters, there have been increased restrictions and security measures in place to ensure the safety of members of the U.S. Congress and the Senate.
On Wednesday, a group of protesters made their way into the Atrium of the Hat Senate Office, ignoring Capitol Police officers’ efforts to cease and vacate the building, but continued with their insurrection.
“This afternoon, nine people were arrested for demonstrating in a prohibited area on Capitol Grounds. At approximately 3:30 pm, the United States Capitol Police responded to the Atrium in the Hart Senate Office Building for reports of illegal demonstration activity,” the U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement. “After officers arrived on the scene, they warned the demonstrators three times to stop. Those who refused were arrested for D.C. Code §22-1307. Two males and seven females were transported to USCP Headquarters for processing.”
Congresswoman Joyce Beatty of Ohio was one of the protesters arrested for challenging Capitol Police requests to cease and desist.
Under $22-1307, the intruders were arrested, “To continue or resume the crowding, obstructing, or incommoding after being instructed by a law enforcement officer to cease the crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.”
Beatty now faces up to 90 days in prison for her insurrection.
