Buffalo gunman charged for double shooting

BUFFALO, NY – Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 32-year-old Edwin R. Calo-Montanez of Buffalo was arraigned yesterday morning before Buffalo City Court Judge Diane Y. Wray on the following charges:

  • Two counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (Class “B” violent felonies)
  • Two counts of Assault in the First Degree (Class “B” violent felonies)
  • One count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Class “C” violent felonies)

It is alleged that on July 14, 2021, at approximately 9:09 p.m., the defendant shot two victims with an illegal firearm, with the intent to cause their deaths, on West Avenue near Vermont Street in the City of Buffalo. Both victims were taken to ECMC with serious physical injuries.

Calo-Montanez is scheduled to return on Friday, July 23, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. for a felony hearing. Judge Wray remanded the defendant without bail.

If convicted of all charges, Calo-Montanez faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Brian D. Langenfeld of the Tactical Prosecution Unit.
