Woman shot in Hyattsville has died in the hospital, suspect now facing murder charge

HYATTSVILLE, MD – A woman who was one of three shot by Justice Simmons two weeks ago has died and now Simmons is facing a new charge for murder.

The Homicide Unit is investigating a shooting that took place on July 11, 2021, in Temple Hills. The suspect is 21-year-old Justice Simmons of the 4200 block of Oglethorpe Street in Hyattsville. He’s charged with the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Rachael Nelson of Washington, DC. Two additional victims were also shot. One remains hospitalized with critical injuries, the other has suffered non-life-threatening injuries. 

On July 11, 2021, at approximately 8:25 pm, officers responded to the 2800 block of Bellbrook Drive for the report of a shooting. Once on scene, officers located Nelson and two other victims suffering from gunshot wounds. All three were taken to a hospital for treatment. On July 22, 2021, Nelson succumbed to her injuries.  


The preliminary investigation revealed the shooting occurred after an argument at a party.

Simmons is charged with first and second-degree murder. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.
