Teen charged for shooting death of Jacksonville 15-year-old

JACKSONVILLE, FL – In the evening hours of Friday, July 2, 2021 , the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the 3800 block of Grant Road in reference to a reported shooting. Upon arrival, a 15-year-old juvenile victim was located with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. JFRD transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.JSO Homicide Detectives, along with the Crime Scene Unit, responded and began their respective investigations into the shooting death.

The investigation revealed the victim and several other juveniles were inside of a shed when one of them produced a firearm. While the suspect was handling the firearm, it discharged and struck the victim. Investigators found no indication the shooting was intentional.

Investigative efforts identified the suspect as Leith Al-Zaidi, 16.


On July 28, 2021, an arrest warrant was obtained for the suspect and he subsequently turned himself in at the Police Memorial Building. He was arrested for Manslaughter, Armed Trespassing, Tampering with Evidence and Possession of a Firearm by a Minor.
