A federal criminal complaint filed Wednesday charges a California surfing school owner for allegedly taking his two children to Mexico and killing them, according to federal authorities.

Matthew Taylor Coleman, 40, of Santa Barbra, California, allegedly killed his two-year-old boy and 10-month old girl Monday after driving them to Rosarito, Mexico, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a press release. Coleman was charged with the foreign murder of U.S. nationals on Thursday.

Coleman told the FBI that he shot his two children in their chests with a spearfishing gun, according to an affidavit obtained by Associated Press.

Coleman told authorities that his son was still alive after he was shot in the chest with a spear gun, according to The New York Times. He also told authorities that he fired the spear directly into his daughter’s heart.

Coleman believed that “his children were going to grow into monsters so he had to kill them,” special agent Jennifer Bannon wrote, according to the NYT.

“M. Coleman explained that he was enlightened by QAnon and Illuminati conspiracy theories and was receiving visions and signs revealing that his wife, A.C., possessed serpent DNA and had passed it on to his children,” Bannon wrote, according to the NYT.

A farmer located the bodies at a ranch near Rosarito in Baja, California, according to the AP.

Coleman and the two kids checked into a Rosarito hotel Saturday and left early Monday morning, Mexican authorities said in a press conference.

He returned to the hotel later Monday morning alone before he left for good and headed back to the border, according to CBS.

Coleman’s wife contacted the Santa Barbra police on Saturday and filed a missing persons report on Sunday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

She used a phone tracing application to track her husband to the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Coleman is the founder of a surfing school in Santa Barbra that offers lessons and surf therapy, according to the NYT. The company website describes him champion surfer, community mentor, experienced educator and passionate spearfisherman.
