Probation officer assaulted after cocaine found during visit at convict’s home

Lincoln- Delaware State Police arrested 42-year-old Roberto Cantu of Lincoln for felony assault on a law enforcement officer after a probation check Thursday night.

On August 19, 2021, at approximately 11:07 p.m., members of the Delaware State Police Sussex County Governor’s Task Force (Delaware State Police and Delaware Probation and Parole) conducted a probation check on Robert Cantu at his residence located on Cedar Drive, Lincoln, DE.  Upon arrival officers located Cantu outside of the residence and performed a search of his person.

Officers discovered suspected cocaine and attempted to take Cantu into custody. A physical struggle ensued which led to an officer from Probation and Parole sustaining a serious injury to his lower extremity. Subsequently, Cantu was taken into custody without further incident. Troopers discovered .64 grams of cocaine and drug paraphernalia on Cantu.


The officer from Delaware Probation and Parole was treated at an area hospital for the injury to his lower extremity.

Cantu was transported to Troop 4 where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Assault 1st Degree Intentionally Case Injury to Law Enforcement Officer (Felony)
  • Resisting Arrest with Force (Felony)
  • Offensive Touching of a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Cantu was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #3 and was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $190,200 cash bond.
