MULLICA HILL, NJ – A massive tornado passed through southwestern New Jersey moving northward at around 7pm on Wednesday as Tropical Storm Ida moved through the region.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency as a result of high winds and massive flooding across many areas of the state.
“Tropical Storm Ida is severely impacting all areas of our state,” said Governor Murphy. “The safety of our residents is our main priority, and we urge everyone to be informed of local weather conditions and to stay off the roads.,” Murphy said.
The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado and immediately issued a warning to evacuate for all communities in its path as it headed north.
“The back edge of rain is starting to work its way in from the west. However, it will take a long time for the runoff to recede! We’re hearing reports that crews are running out of resources to rescue people stuck in flood waters. People are continuing to drive into flood waters resulting in hundreds of water rescues. Please, unless you must travel, stay home tonight in you live in NJ or PA. Many rivers in the area may not crest until tomorrow. Please continue to heed any road closures,” the NWS said.
“Just spoke with Harrison Township Mayor Lou Manzo about the devastating tornado that ripped through the Mullica Hill community and surrounding area tonight. We’re closely monitoring the situation and will do whatever is needed to support the response & recovery in the days ahead,” Murphy said.
Many homes in the community were damaged and several were destroyed by the large wedge tornado.
