Drunk driver indicted for crash that left victim with serious injuries

PATERSON, NJ – Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces that Ibrahim Sumrein, age 23, of Wayne, New Jersey, has been indicted in connection to a December 21, 2019 motor vehicle crash that occurred in the City of Paterson that left one person seriously injured.

A Passaic County Grand Jury has returned Indictment No. 21-09-00536-I, charging Mr. Sumrein with one count of second-degree Aggravated Assault, one count of second degree Assault by Auto While Intoxicated and Within 1,000 Feet of School Property, one count of third-degree Assault by Auto While Intoxicated, and one count of fourth-degree Assault by Auto.

The sentencing exposure on second degree Aggravated Assault and second degree Assault by Auto While Intoxicated and Within 1,000 Feet of School Property is 5-10 years in New Jersey State Prison, and the Aggravated Assault charge would require him to serve 85% of the term before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act, and three years of parole supervision; on third-degree Assault by Auto While Intoxicated, is 3-5 years in New Jersey State Prison; and on fourth-degree Assault by Auto, is up to 18 months in New Jersey State Prison.


Mr. Sumrein was released following his arrest pending future court proceedings. He will be scheduled for arraignment before a Superior Court Judge at a date and time determined by the Court.
