TOMS RIVER, NJ – A man drowned at the beach in Brick Township Saturday and others were rescued from rip currents along the Jersey Shore in Ocean County. The currents are being churned by Tropcial Storm Odette.
The man, 54, was rescued by surfers and transported to the man who later died at Hackensack Meridian Ocean Medical Center.
Lifeguards were not on duty in Brick this weekend.
In Toms River, Freehold man and two Connecticut women were rushed to the hospital after being caught in the rough surf, prompting officials to close the beach.
“Pleased be advise, Toms River ocean beaches are closed to swimmers due to dangerous rip currents. Please stay out of the water,” the Toms River Police Department said.
The National Weather Service issued the following warning, “Rough surf leading to a higher risk for rip currents is expected today and continuing into tomorrow (due to Tropical Storm Odette which is well off shore and will be moving away from the region). Entering the surf is strongly discouraged!”
