Pedestrian struck and killed on Black Horse Pike

On Monday, September 27, 2021, the Egg Harbor Township Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 8:25 AM on the Black Horse Pike at English Creek Avenue, in the Cardiff section of the township.

A 2003 Honda CRV, operated by Michael Doyle, 31 years of age from Tuckerton, was traveling eastbound on Black Horse Pike, when it disregarded the red light at English Creek Avenue and struck a pedestrian. Anthony Swezeny 33 years of age from Egg Harbor Township was attempting to cross the Black Horse Pike from the south to north side. The Honda also struck a 2021 Chevy van operated by Joseph Avellino, 59 years of age from Egg Harbor Township. The van was travelling south on English Creek and crossing the Black Horse Pike when the crash occurred.

As a result of the crash, Swezeny sustained multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Doyle and his passenger, Brittney Trapp, 28 years of age from Tuckerton, sustained injuries in the crash and were treated at the scene by AtlantiCare paramedics, the Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad and transported to AtlantiCare City Division. The Black Horse Pike was shut down and detoured for approximately 3 hours so the crash could be investigated and cleared

Sergeant Larry Graham, Officers Robert Moran and Officer Benjamin Kollman of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit are investigating the crash. The Atlantic County Prosecutors Office assisted in the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
