Suspect stole car as victim was unloading groceries, arrested

DOJ Press

SALINAS, PD – Salinas PD received a report of a stolen car. The victim dropped their car keys while carrying their groceries into their house. The suspect, John Anderson, picked up the keys and stole the victim’s car.

About 30 minutes later, a deputy spotted the stolen car in Castroville. The deputy attempted to stop the car when it stopped at a gas station. Anderson put the car in drive and fled at a high rate of speed towards Salinas on Highway 183 reaching speeds of 110 mph.

A second deputy set up spike strips ahead of the pursuit which successfully deflated two tires. Anderson slowed down and jumped out of the car before it came to a stop, causing the car to roll down a hill and crash into the fields.

Anderson ran away on foot despite having been told he would be bit by a Sheriff’s K9. He didn’t make it very far before he was apprehended by K9 Tonus. Anderson was booked into the Monterey County Jail for vehicle theft, evading, resisting arrest, and violating his probation terms.
