Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide investigators are continuing to assist Hawthorne Police Department with a death investigation. The incident was reported Saturday, October 9, 2021, at approximately 2:00 a.m., on the 14200 block of Hawthorne Blvd in the city of Hawthorne.

Homicide detectives have learned that approximately 12:08 a.m. Hawthorne Police Department received several calls for service regarding a vehicle driving on the sidewalk attempting to strike people that were standing.

The driver of the vehicle had a verbal altercation inside the business, 14200 block of Hawthorne Blvd. The driver was asked to leave the location but returned, driving his truck onto the sidewalk and nearly striking several patrons standing on the sidewalk.  The driver ultimately lost control and hit a tree. Surrounding patrons attempted to take the driver out of his vehicle, but the driver was able to accelerate and drove his truck into a nearby building.  Patrons again took the driver out of his vehicle, and a physical altercation ensued; at this time, Hawthorne police officers arrived on scene.

Hawthorne Police officers saw the driver lying on the ground, suffering what appeared to be blunt force trauma.  Paramedics provided life-saving measures, but he was pronounced deceased on scene.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
