Role Reversal, How Do You Parent Your Parent?

Jessica Woods

Because Americans are living on the average 30 years longer than a half a century ago, many adult children are finding themselves in unknown and confusing situations taking care of their parents.  Dr. Peter N. Fish, a board certified internist and geriatrician, and Jim Mahlmann, an internet marketing specialist, have formed Reverse Parenting LLC to help educate adult children in all facets of parental caretaking when their parents are no longer able to take care of themselves physical, mentally, and/or financially.

Once people sign up, they will find frequently updated blog posts, instructional videos, important documents, resources to stimulate a parent’s memory, and exercises to maintain physical strength. In the membership portal members can also request a teleconference with an experienced medical professional, such as a physician, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, who knows the conditions and symptoms that often affect geriatric patients. Medical providers will also connect members with elder care lawyers, financial advisors, and social workers.

Dr. Fish, who has been practicing medicine for 23 years, is a member of American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Medical Association, the American Medical Directors Association, and The Society for Post-Acute and Long-term Care Medicine. Dr. Fish is an Army medical officer, with 22 years of service to America.  He has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, is a qualified Flight Surgeon and currently serves as a Brigade Surgeon. He is a published author with a passionate commitment to the care of our nations’ seniors.

Other members of the Reverse Parent team include Jim Mahlmann, managing partner of NetCetra, a technology consultant whose company offers web design, programming internet marketing, social media, web hosting and cloud applications, among other services; Gina-Marie LoBraico Reitano, Esq., elder law attorney, and Norine Wong, MSW, ACSW, LSW, CCM, medical social worker.
