Convicted Toms River sex offender arrested after crash with body armor, rifle, hollow point bullets

MANTOLOKING, NJ – A Toms River man who is a registered sex offender crashed his vehicle in Mantoloking early Sunday morning and police found a loaded AR-15, body armor, a 9mm handgun, and hollow point ammunition. Police did not say why 46-year-old James Barringer was armed to the teeth while driving along the Jersey Shore at 3:00 am. At this time he remains remanded in the Ocean County Jail.

Mantoloking Police Reported:

Early Sunday morning at 3:02 am, Mantoloking Patrolman La Rue was dispatched to a single vehicle motor vehicle crash in the 1200 block of Ocean Ave (Rt. 35). The driver, Jeremy W. Barringer, 46, of Toms River, NJ was found to be wearing body armor, in possession of a loaded AR-15 rifle, three high capacity magazines with hollow point bullets, one loaded 9mm handgun with addit ional magazines loaded with hollow point rounds and a holster.


Mr. Barringer was taken into custody and charged with numerous offenses including; unlawful possession of a rifle, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of 59-9mm hollow-point bullets, possession of 80 – 5.56 hollow point rifle rounds, possession of a weapon after being a convicted sex offender and eight counts of possession of high capacity magazines. Mr. Barringer was charged and transported to Ocean County Jail.
