Woman fights off carjacker after stopping to help injured motorist

WORCESTER, MA – On Saturday, November 13, 2021 at approximately 2:00 AM a Worcester Police officer was flagged down by a female in the area 575 Park Ave. The female had pulled over to help a male who had crashed a vehicle into the concrete foundation of a business sign. She parked close to the crash scene and kept her key in the ignition. The female approached the operator of the vehicle and attempted to render aid.

The operator, later identified as Mr. William Vasbinder, exited the vehicle, ran to the female’s vehicle and jumped into the driver’s seat in an attempt to steal the vehicle. The female quickly tried to pull Mr. Vasbinder from her driver’s seat. A struggle ensued between the two. Mr. Vasbinder repeatedly punched the female with a closed fist. The female was able to take the keys out of the ignition. Mr. Vasbinder fled the scene on foot when he heard police sirens.

When officers arrived on scene, they immediately started to search the area. They located Mr. Vasbinder in the area of 90 birch Street.


During the investigation, officers discovered that the vehicle he crashed was stolen and that his driver’s license was revoked.

Officers called an ambulance for Mr. Vasbinder to be treated for non-life threatening injuries he sustained during the crash.

Mr. Vasbinder, 40, of 58 Sunnyside Ave., Putnam, CT was charged with Assault and Battery, Carjacking, Operating a Vehicle without a License, Leaving the Scene of Property Damage, and Using a Motor Vehicle without Authority.
