CHICAGO, IL – Chicago’s progressive liberal mayor Lori Lightfoot is now blaming retailers in her city for the uptick in organized smash and grab thefts that have been happening.

“Some of the retailers downtown in Michigan Avenue, I will tell you, I’m disappointed that they are not doing more to take safety and make it a priority,” Lightfoot said. “For example, we still have retailers that won’t institute plans like having security officers in their stores. Making sure that they’ve got cameras that are actually operational, locking up their merchandise at night, chaining high-end bags. These purses seem to be something that is attracting a lot of organized retail theft units.”

The White House disagreed with Lightfoot’s assessment.

“We don’t agree and I think the actions and the work that we’ve had with the Justice Department and FBI, Federal law enforcement show that we take, we have seen some of these extremely disturbing videos showing retail thefts,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said. “This is of serious concern. We agree.”
