FRESNO, CA – The Fresno Police Department is investigating a case where a man fired shots at Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies. No deputies were injured. The armed suspect is deceased.

The man who fired his gun at deputies has been identified as 27-year-old Roberto Jose Gamez of Fresno. A booking photo from June 2, 2021 is attached. He was released on zero-dollar bail that day for possession of drugs for sale.

Around 3:30 pm Wednesday, detectives with the Sheriff’s Ag Task Force Unit were following up on a report of stolen farm equipment. While on the property, a person in a black Lexus fled the area. Detectives attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over. About a minute into the pursuit, the driver lost control and crashed his car, rolling it onto its roof on Cedar Ave., south of North Ave. The driver immediately began firing shots at deputies behind him.

Deputies took cover and waited for additional help to arrive. A Sheriff’s drone unit was deployed and flew near the suspect’s car. Utilizing the drone’s camera, the man was found to be injured and not moving. After a considerable amount of time passed, deputies deemed it safe to approach the car. There they discovered the gunman was deceased. It is unknown what the suspect’s cause of death is and who he is. This remains an ongoing investigation and more details will be released as they become available.

Fresno Police is investigating the incident due to it occurring in their jurisdiction.
