It’s not working: New Jersey reports highest-ever single day COVID-19 positive number since pandemic began

Robert Walker

TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey is one of America’s most vaccinated states. It has one of the toughest mask mandates in the country, requiring masks in public buildings and in all public schools and colleges. Masks are required on mass transit. Over 6,000,000 New Jerseyans are fully vaccinated and nearly 2 million more have received their booster shots.

On Thursday, Murphy announced 7,637 new positive COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours. That total includes 6,271 new positive PCR tests and 1,366 new positive antigen tests.

It’s not working. On Thursday, New Jersey recorded its highest unadjusted single-day COVID-19 case total since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020. Then, it was 14 days to flatten the curve. Nearly two years later, New Jersey is in a far worse situation when it comes to COVID-19 cases than it was then.

That’s because more people are being tested, but also because nothing is working the way it was supposed to work. Double vaccination regimens of Pfizer and Moderna aren’t working. This week, the governor finally couldn’t hide it any longer. The rate of hospitalizations among the vaccinated and unvaccinated in New Jersey is equal. 47% of hospitalizations in New Jersey are now fully vaccinated ‘breakthrough’ cases, the Governor said on Monday.

But are the new cases reasons to be alarmed? Are they a justification for another prolonged Phil Murphy school and business lockdown? More importantly, can New Jersey’s economy survive another long-term pandemic lockdown at the hands of Phil Murphy?

Murphy promised during his campaign that he would not implement vaccine mandates or vaccine passports. He said the passport would lockout New Jersey’s most vulnerable communities and unfairly target minorities.

Now, as we move ahead, Murphy has altered the definition of fully vaccinated to include those individuals with a booster shot. He made the push on Monday as he celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Trump “Warp Speed” vaccination program’s release of a COVID-19 vaccine.

As we speak, Murphy is working with state Democrats in Trenton to restore his pandemic powers. Without an emergency declaration, Murphy’s powers are limited. Instead, he has been lobbying Democrat legislators to legislatively empower him to reinstitute his pandemic lockdown powers.

The existing mask mandate in public schools is set to expire in early January.
