New Jersey Assembly majority speaker Craig Coughlin, a Democrat who is pushing for the renewal of Phil Murphy’s pandemic emergency powers has tested positive for COVID-19. Coughlin will participate in today’s vote remotely.

“I am experiencing very mild cold-like symptoms, but feel fine and am in good spirits,” said Speaker Coughlin. “It is for this exact reason, with the goal of protecting the health and safety of my fellow members, invited guests, and all involved in our proceedings, that the update to our policy was made last week. Out of an abundance of caution I will be self-isolating and participating virtually in Monday’s voting session and Tuesday’s reorganization.”

Coughlin credits his face mask’s life-saving abilities and his vaccine and booster for still being alive today.

“I remain extremely grateful that my symptoms are more than manageable, which is thanks to the science of vaccination and boosters, as well as the extra precaution of wearing a mask,” he said.
