NEWARK, NJ – Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara reports the arrest of Zaire B. Bowman, 25, of Irvington, who was illegally dumping solid waste on January 18, 2022.

Police Officers were on patrol around 8:15 a.m. after receiving complaints about illegal dumping in the industrial area of the North Ward. While in the area of 21-49 McCarter Highway, the officers observed a suspicious red dump truck with its bed raised unloading dirt mixed with stone. The officers conducted a motor vehicle stop to further their investigation. It was determined that the driver, later identified as Bowman, was illegally off-loading construction debris. He was taken into custody and charged with illegally dumping solid waste and transporting solid waste. The vehicle was towed and impounded.

The penalty for illegal dumping is $5,000 for a first offense, $10,000 for a second offense and up to $20,000 for the third offense, depending on what is being dumped.

Director O’Hara urges anyone with information about a crime to call the Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477).
