Woman killed after unsuccessfully trying to jump into freight train car

DEERFIELD BEACH, FL – Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the death of a woman who was struck by a Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) freight train Wednesday, Jan. 19.


Shortly before 4 a.m. that Wednesday, BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to a train versus pedestrian call near Southeast Fourth Street and South Dixie Highway in Deerfield Beach. 

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 3:16 a.m. that morning, a FEC freight train was traveling northbound, crossing through the intersection of Southeast Fourth Street and South Dixie Highway. At some point, after the train crossed the intersection, the victim jumped into the freight cars and was struck. The impact caused the adult female to project in a northeast direction, where she then struck a metal sign pole.

The victim was pronounced deceased on scene by paramedics.
