GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Columbus

Columbus, GA (January 7, 2022) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Columbus, GA.  The Columbus Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Friday, January 7, 2022.  One man, Tabias Maddox, age 39, of Columbus, was injured in this incident.  No officers were injured.

The preliminary information indicates that on Friday, January 7, 2022, at around 1:00 A.M., Columbus Police responded to a 911 call about gun shots being fired in the vicinity of Habitat Drive and Annette Avenue.  Upon arrival, police observed a car leaving the area and began to pursue it.  The pursuit ended nearby in the vicinity of Buena Vista Road and Chesterfield Avenue.  At that time, Maddox, the driver of the car, got out and while running away, shot a handgun at police.  An officer returned gunfire, hitting Maddox in the leg.

Maddox was given initial medical treatment at the scene and was then taken to the hospital.
