Columbus mourns the loss of veteran police officer

COLUMBUS, OH – The City of Columbus is mourning the loss of a veteran police officer today after he passed away unexpectedly.

Officer Robert F. Smallwood died unexpectedly on January 22, 2022. Officer Smallwood began his career with Columbus Police as a member of the 110th recruit class. He spent his entire 15-year career working Patrol on Zone 2, working on 9 and 14 Precinct. His current assignment was working 9 Precinct A Company. He will be greatly missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.

Public Visitation will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022, at Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home, located at 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester, Ohio, from 11:00am until 1:00pm, with the FOP Service at 12:40pm. The funeral service will begin at 1:00pm immediately after the viewing hours at the funeral home. Graveside services will follow the conclusion of the funeral service at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens, located at 5802 Elder Road, Canal Winchester, Ohio. Marked cruisers will lead the procession to the cemetery led by the Columbus Division of Police Motorcycle Unit. Upon arrival at the funeral home, please follow the parking directions of our Motorcycle Unit Officers and the instructions of the Honor Guard.


Attire for this funeral will be long sleeve white shirt and tie, hat, mourning bands are not authorized.
