Six Students Arrested After Newark High School Brawl

NEWARK, NJ – There was no social distancing at Newark High School on Monday as multiple fights broke out across the school, even as police officers were trying to break up other fights.

The Newark Police Department reported that after 2:00 pm, the department’s School Resource Officers were monitoring dismissal at Newark High School when a fight broke out among students.

“As the officers attempted to break up the fight, additional fights broke out in the same area.  The officers called for assistance and ultimately about a dozen Newark Police Officers responded to assist,” the Newark Police Department said in a statement. “Officers, with the assistance of school staff, were able to break-up the fights.”

Officers arrested six students, ages 14-17, who were all transported to Newark Police headquarters.

The department said they were each charged with resisting arrest and/or disorderly conduct.  All of the defendants were released to a parent to appear in Family Court at a later date.

No one was injured during this incident and no weapons were involved. School Resource Officers are continuing to investigate the incident to determine if additional arrests are warranted.
