DELTONA, FL – A Deltona man is charged with attempted 2nd-degree murder in a shooting Thursday morning that critically injured his daughter’s ex-boyfriend.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Todd Powers, 46, was charged with possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm in public.

“Deputies responded to 3049 Waterman Street around 9:30 a.m. Thursday after the shooting was reported. The victim, a 23-year-old DeLand man, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was lying in the driveway when deputies arrived,” the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to court records, the victim was transported to an area hospital and detectives began investigating what led to the shooting. It was determined that the victim came to the house to see his ex-girlfriend, because the two were still friends. When he arrived in the driveway, though, he was first met by her father (Powers) and brother, and a verbal altercation started.

“The brother told detectives the argument became physical when the victim punched him and he punched back, and they ended up fighting on the ground on the driveway,” the VCSO said in a statement Thursday night. ” (Detectives did not find any signs of injuries to either person, and no other signs of a struggle or evidence of a fight were evident.) The brother explained when the physical fight ended, the two separated, and he went inside while his father stayed out in the garage area.”

According to the report, shortly after that, several gunshots were heard, followed by a 30- to 45-second pause, and then more gunshots. Some of the shots could be overheard on the 911 call reporting the shooting, followed by a male voice yelling: “I don’t know what he thought was going to happen.”
