NORTH FORT MEYERS, FL – A Lee County serial golf cart thief is finally behind bars, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, a North Fort Myers man is in the Lee County Jail, charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property.

“Since January, communities along North Cleveland Avenue were plagued with golf cart thefts. The North District Criminal Investigations Unit conducted operations to develop a suspect and stop this trend. Samuel Retherford became a suspect when detectives obtained information that he traded a stolen golf cart at a business in Brooksville, Florida,” LCSO said in a statement.

On March 3, 2022, a $5,000 golf cart was stolen from Horizon Village in North Fort Myers. The golf cart was later located at the intersection of Lakeville Boulevard and North Cleveland Avenue, tethered to another stolen golf cart.

“The golf carts were listed for sale with a sign and a phone number. That phone number belonged to Retherford and a sales transaction was arranged. Retherford met with deputies and was immediately taken into custody,” LCSO said in a statement.
