Pedestrian struck in Downtown Toms River, in critical condition

TOMS RIVER, NJ – A pedestrian was struck and rushed to the hospital at the intersection of Washington Street and Hooper Avenue in Downtown Toms River is in critical condition police reported Wednesday.

“On Wednesday, at approximately 1:15 PM, police units were dispatched to the intersection of Hooper Avenue and Washington Street for a reported pedestrian struck. Upon police arrival, EMS units were working on the patient, who sustained head trauma and was semi-conscious. She was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition,” Toms River Police Department Spokeswoman Jillian Messina reported. “The initial investigation revealed that a woman was crossing Hooper Ave near the intersection of Washington Street, outside of the crosswalk, when she was struck by Anthony Jonin, 18 of Beachwood, who was making a left turn from Washington Street with a green arrow. Witnesses stated that the woman crossed against the “Do Not Cross” signal, and had an umbrella over her head, which may have obstructed her view of turning vehicles.”

The accident is under investigation by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Adam Koeppen. There are no summons at this time. Assisting at the scene were multiple sheriff’s officers, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, as well as, the Ocean County Sheriff’s CIU.
