PERTH AMBOY, NJ – Perth Amboy firefighters rescued an occupant from the third floor of a home in the city Sunday night. The fire broke out at 228 Second Street at around 7:35 pm.
“Upon arrival, heavy smoke was found from the 2.5 story dwelling with a person still inside,” the Perth Amboy Fire Department said. “Crews immediately began a primary search, found and removed a 3rd-floor occupant and turned him over to EMS for treatment and transport.”
Fire officials said the blaze was upgraded to a 2nd alarm and multiple hose lines were stretched to work on extinguishing a fire that had extended from the basement all the way to the attic via the balloon frame open bays.
“Crews were also forced to a defensive attack after heavy fire vented from the attic with a collapse of the roof and master streams were used to knock it down,” the department said. “Crews then reentered to fully extinguish all remaining hotspots. The fire took approximately two hours to bring under control and was kept to the building of origin.”
Approximately 10 occupants were displaced and assisted by city relocation officers.
