PHILADELPHIA, PA – Two Pennsylvania State Troopers were struck and killed by a female motorist they had conducted a traffic stop with just minutes prior. Two officers from Philadelphia’s Troop K had initiated a traffic stop with a female driver, but according to multiple reports, aborted that stop after being notified of a pedestrian walking along Interstate 95.

The troopers left the scene of the traffic stop and assisted with the pedestrian on I-95. As the two officers responded to the call of the unknown subject in the roadway, they were struck by a passing SUV, which happened to be the same vehicle stopped earlier by the officers.

Both officers and the pedestrian were struck and killed when the vehicle crashed into the police cruiser.

At around 5 a.m., police officers led a procession as the bodies of the officers were taken to the medical examiner’s office. Traffic along I-95 was shut down in both directions during this morning’s rush hour until about 9 a.m.

The incident occurred at 12:40 am. The Pennsylvania State Police have not released any details and are expected to hold a press conference this morning.

Governor Tom Wolf issued the following statement on the death of two Pennsylvania state troopers and a civilian who were fatally struck during a traffic stop early this morning in Philadelphia, “Frances and I are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of these two state troopers and the individual they were assisting.”

“This tragedy is a reminder that our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day, and we Pennsylvanians are grateful for the men and women who protect us and our communities,” Governor Wolf said. “Frances and I are praying for the loved ones of these courageous troopers, the civilian they were assisting, and for the Pennsylvania State Police.”
