PEMBERTON, NJ – The Pemberton Fire Department on Monday fought fire with fire, setting backfires to contain a brush fire that broke out during the day at the Joint Base.

“There is a brush fire on the Joint Base behind Lakeshore Mobile Village. There are no homes in danger and the base is working on this fire. They will be conducting backfires and there will be smoke throughout town,” the Pemberton Township Volunteer Fire Department reported.

A backfire is a fire set along the inner edge of a fireline to consume the fuel in the path of a wildfire and/or change the direction of force of the fire’s convection column, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
